Doctors Report Removing 27 Contact Lenses From A Woman's Eye

In a weird medical case, a British woman somehow had more than two dozen contact lenses in one eye but didn't realize it.

This unusual case actually happened last November, but it was not made public until now.

A woman and her doctor were both shocked to discover almost 30 contact lenses stuck together in the woman's eye when she went in for routine cataract surgery.

She told Optometry Today: "It was such a large mass". She didn't have "regular optometrist appointments" and did not report symptoms in relation to the lenses. According to the publication, she wore daily disposable lenses for 35 years. We were astounded to see that the patient had not felt, because it has cause a good number of irritations as it was in place.

Morjaria told Optometry Today, the online journal of the UK's Association of Optometrists, that the woman was unaware that she had the mass of lenses on her eye.

Outside of that one single glob of contact lenses, there were ten other lenses in the woman's eye.

When they were performing the surgery and saw the lenses, they preferred to remove them all and stop there, postponing the cataract procedure because of a great risk of infection.

She said: "She was quite shocked". The patient complained of discomfort in her eye and simply blamed it on old age and dry eye. "But if they are not appropriately monitored, we see people with serious eye infections that can cause them to lose their sight".

According to Dr. Morjaria, given the fact that they didn't know for how long had the lenses been there, if they continued the surgery then the patient would have had a lot of bacteria in her conjunctiva, increasing the risks of endophthalmitis, which is a bad inflammation of the eye. This is why even the FDA recommends that in order to allow the eye to take oxygen, even the long-term contact lenses should ideally be removed overnight at least once a week.

Morjaria said she decided to make the case public to raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups with optometrists.
