The Jackson County Health Department reports routine mosquito testing identified some who tested positive for West Nile in the county in 2017.

West Nile is common, found every summer in dead birds and mosquitoes in the area.

Go www.idph.state.il.us or call the Whiteside County Health Department at 815-772 7411 for more information about West Nile virus surveillance and prevention.

This is the first positive test for West Nile Virus in Ada County this year, according to the news release.

Since 2004, 229 Butte County residents have contracted the virus and eight have died.

West Nile is transmitted through mosquito bites, but four out of five people bitten by infected mosquitoes will not experience any illness.

The first human case of the mosquito-borne virus was reported in the county last month, about three weeks earlier than the first case previous year.

Eliminate standing water around your home, and trim tall grass in your yard.

In addition to birds and humans, horses are also affected by WNV due to the high mortality rate of horses that contract the disease, owners are encouraged to make sure their horses are kept current with their WNV vaccinations.

Wear insect repellent, dress in long-sleeve clothing, replace and fix window screens, and stay indoors during peak mosquito times. Apply EPA-registered insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon, eucalyptus, or IR3535 according to label instructions.

REDUCE exposure - Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Individuals should not attempt to handle the birds, although there is no evidence that people can get the virus from handling live or dead birds.
