Lonzo Ball's Lakers show promise during Summer League run

The Lakers' rookie rocked his Big Baller Brand ZO2s for his first summer league game, but stopped wearing them after that.

After scoring 10 points in 21 minutes in their quarterfinal victory over the Boston Celtics, the Kiwi played 24 minutes off the bench in the semifinal against the Lakers.

Ball also had 7 turnovers and only shot 6-20 from the field, but his shooting was mostly expected to be hot and cold, and the raw highlights are still pretty impressive*.

Ball sizzled with a double-double of 16 points and 10 assists to go with 4 rebounds but had to exit the game in the 3rd period with right calf tightness.

"The Lakers, when they were bringing their teams there was a ton of excitement anyhow", said Warren LeGarie, an agent who helped create Las Vegas Summer League. He's also been a Lakers fan since the days when Magic Johnson was playing instead of constructing the Lakers' roster as their president of basketball operations.

It's all speculation because Ball hasn't given an actual answer on this, but after what Ball Don't Lie's Eric Freeman called his "best Summer League game" in Nike's, it can't be ignored. Over fantastic production from Zaytoven, Nessly raps about how he's dropping money like he doesn't have any bills for "Lonzo Ball!".

"This is the first time my calf got tight", Ball told reporters.

Even in just a handful of games, Ball's passing seems to have become contagious among his teammates.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been rolling lately in the Las Vegas Summer League. Second-year player Brandon Ingram only played in one Summer League game, but he dropped 26 points in it. You can see the team taking joy in making the extra pass now and that's how we want to play as an organization. He knows more than just music, though. "We'll see how he feels in the morning". In particular, Lonzo Ball looked like a bust in his first game, but has bounced back in remarkable fashion.

The Lakers built a 62-40 halftime lead over the Mavericks. He drained 5 of 7 shots, including 2 of 3 3-pointers, for 16 points. "It's a bit of a gamble for the young Lakers, but they do need more veteran voices, and if Rondo can perform at the same level he hit in last season's playoffs, then this could be a move that really pays off", Eric Avakian said in his report for Lakers Nation.

"I like the idea the Balls are taking control of their own lives and trying to start their own brand and do things their way", said Mark Appelbaum, 51, who sat courtside in a Kobe Bryant high school jersey.
