Michael Vick Says Colin Kaepernick Should Cut His Afro

1:05 | NFL Michael Vick says Colin Kaepernick needs to cut his hair if he wants to be signed by an NFL team

Kaepernick's political philosophy extends beyond the few protests on the NFL field, so if owners do have an issues that extend beyond his performance as a football player, it's more likely due to his continued activism than because of his kneeling during the national anthem.

Today, Vick was a guest on Fox Sports 1's "Speak for Yourself", and he had some surprising comments regarding what Kaepernick, who was cut by the San Francisco 49ers and has yet to sign with another team, needed to do to get back to the NFL. "Listen, I love the guy to death, but I want him to also succeed on and off the field and this has to be a start for him".

Kaepernick's failure to find a new team has surprised many.

"You're already dealing with a lot, a lot of controversy surrounding this issue, and the most important thing he needs to do is just try to be presentable".

People can debate about whether Kaepernick is being blackballed or his recent play is keeping him out of a job or that it's a combination of both.

Vick also made the case that National Football League teams may be hesitating to sign Kaepernick because he wouldn't be a fit in a pro-style offense that requires more of a pocket passer: "Any other type of offense I don't think will help him right now because it's going to take him so long to adjust and learn the system, protections, blitzes, what to look for, receivers, that type of camaraderie doesn't happen overnight". The gesture that he made a year ago when he took the stand to do what he did... listen, we all appreciated it, we respected it.

"Colin didn't have the best two years his last two seasons", Vick said. But he also assessed Kaepernick's ability to play quarterback - and how it only fits in with certain teams.

Vick also said on multiple occasions that he thinks Kaepernick's play is the main reason he's now unemployed. "His play is good enough to have attracted interest from teams by now". "So, if you have a fade and wear a suit, that makes you a better person?"

To be fair, Vick did go on to say that the primary reason that Kaepernick is now out of a quarterbacking job is because of the downward trend of his play over the last two seasons. Any other type of offense I don't think will help him right now because it's going to take him so long to adjust and learn the system: protections, blitzes, what to look for, receivers. "I still think his heart is in football. He's fairly young", Vick said.
