Microsoft Eyes Unused TV Channels To Deliver Rural Broadband

This map based on FCC data shows broadband connectivity by county in the U.S. Via Microsoft

According to Microsoft, more than 23 million Americans in rural areas presently need highspeed internet access, regardless of several billions of dollars in federal investment.

It is understood that FCC chairman Ajit Pai is to travel to areas of southern Virginia to visit a pilot project that demonstrates Microsoft's Rural Airband technology. Lastly, Microsoft plans to invest in digital skills training for people in rural communities as well.

Microsoft is announcing plans today to expand broadband Internet services across rural areas of the USA through use of unused wireless spectrum known as "white space". The now unused spectrum will let wireless signals travel over hills and through buildings and trees, according to Smith.

Allies for Microsoft include internet service providers, since the tech giant doesn't want to be an ISP itself.

Entitled the Rural Airband Initiative, the plan is to connect more than 2m Americans in 12 states within the next five years.

North doesn't have ICBM re-entry technology - S. Korea
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the test indicated a quicker than expected pace of the North's ICBM program . The B-1B Lancers were accompanied by USA and South Korean fighter jets as part of a 10-hour mission.

In a blog post, Smith said that the USA should aim to eliminate the urban-rural internet access gap by July 4, 2022.

IL is not on that list, which includes Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, but if the program is successful it is expected to expand.

Federal and state infrastructure investments should include targeted funds on a matching basis for the capital investments that will best expand coverage into rural areas that now lack broadband access today.

The National Association of Broadcasters dismissed the initiative as the "height of arrogance" for Microsoft to "demand free, unlicensed spectrum after refusing to bid on TV airwaves" in a recent FCC auction.

Wharton said that the buffer zones are important for preventing adjacent channels from interfering with each other.

However, Microsoft doesn't intent to become a communications provider.
