Nature break cost me stage win: Matthews

Chris Froome expected to lose the yellow jersey again when he needed a wheel change at a critical moment of yesterday's stage 15 of the Tour de France.

But the three-time Tour victor held on and retains his lead of 18 seconds over Italian Fabio Aru, with Frenchman Romain Bardet a further five seconds down in third place.

Quick-Step rider Dan Martin finished 25th and moves up to fifth in the General Classification, 72 seconds off yellow jersey holder Chris Froome.

The defending champion came seventh, one second behind stage victor Michael Matthews of Australia as Aru, who started the day with the yellow jersey on his shoulders, lost 25 seconds to the Briton in the final effort, a 600-metre climb at an average gradient of 9.6 per cent.

Germany's Tony Martin sought to use his time trial expertise when he launched a solo attack with around 66km to go, as the race approached the Col de Peyra Taillade.

The three-time Tour victor and defending champion punctured at a critical moment and was forced to work hard to ensure he finished with his main rivals. Then I just gave it a try in the last 30km. The race for the win was well ahead of us.

Matthews won the intermediate sprint to claim a maximum 20 points during the stage between Laissac-Severac l'Eglise and Le Puy-en-Velay. Thanks to my team-mates, Sergio Henao and Mikel Nieve, who helped me.

"Bardet used the team properly, but then you're not going to distance Froome using the team mates who are already exhausted having ridden in the front all day".

Mollema was preceded by 19 seconds, his first pursuers, the Italian Diego Ulissi, france's Tony Gallopin, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, followed by another Frenchman, Warren Barguil.

"It's magical, really", Federer said.

George Bennett has held onto 11th place in the Tour de France after a solid ride in a tricky 14th stage. "I had to get back by the top of that climb or it was game over for me".

I've worked for it so hard in the last few years.

"Kwiatkowski is sharp, super sharp, and I guarantee he'd have made the call and he did well", Brailsford said. "I think older guys can use the Giro to prepare for the Tour, you can win a stage in the Giro, like [Sky's Mikel] Landa is doing, but I think to ride the Giro and Tour for the win is impossible". Barguil covered the distance in 2 1/2 hours, half the time of some of the Tour's longer stages with twice as much road to cover. It was close to the chases at the end. And it was Federer, not Cilic, who faced the match's initial break point, 15 minutes in, trailing 2-1 and 30-40. "It is the biggest win of my career".

The big loser of the day was Colombia's Nairo Quintana, who dropped out of the overall top 10.
