Panthers unexpectedly fire Ex Giants exec Dave Gettleman

Gettleman, 66, worked in the Giants' front office from 1999-2012 before being hired as Carolina's general manager prior to the 2013 season.

The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Dave Gettleman less than two weeks before the opening of training camp.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have made a decision to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager", team owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the problems between Gettleman and owner Jerry Richardson may have started when the Panthers allowed the star cornerback to hit free agency last summer. His resume includes being a part of three Super-Bowl-winning teams as part of seven team appearances with different organizations. Carolina became the first team in NFC South history to win the division title in consecutive years. The 33-year-old signed a three-year extension worth $22.5 million with $12 million guaranteed in 2015.

Shortly after news broke Monday of Gettleman's surprising firing, former Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. weighed in with a Twitter bombshell.

"I don't feel bitter at all", Williams said at the time, per WBTV.
