'Planet of the Apes' topples 'Spider-Man' in weekend debut

Andy Serkis

With a $56.5 million in its second week from 4,022 theatres across North America, 20th Century Fox" "War for the Planet of the Apes" has leapt past Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming' at the box office.

As for Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Homecoming, don't feel too bad for it. The science fiction film is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Steve Zahn. War racked up a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 83/100 from Metacritic.

The closing chapter of the Planet of the Apes trilogy is possibly the best installment in the franchise. "This is epic episodic storytelling". It's a feat War for the Planet of the Apes pulls off throughout: telling its biblically-themed story about war, revenge, and militarism with a cast of intelligent apes, while somehow successfully playing it straight. That was a million more on Thursday than the last film in the series did, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes went on to earn $72.6 million over opening weekend. The Pixar Animation film is now up to $140 million domestically and is revving up overseas, now hitting $222.9 million worldwide. Its total, which puts it in the same boat as Rise of the Planet of the Apes' $54.8 million, is also slightly below $60 million initial expectations.

Another sequel suffering the summer box office blahs is Universal's Despicable Me 3, which landed in third with an estimated $18.9 million from 4,155 theaters.

"Sick" stars Kumail Nanjiani in the semi-autobiographical role of a Pakistani-American stand-up comic who resists his parents' insistent efforts to find a wife for him, and instead falls in love with comedy-club customer Emily, played by Zoe Kazan. The film earned $8 million over three weeks I limited release and is expected to double that number in wide release for a box office total of $16 million.

The horror film Wish Upon was a blip on the summer movie radar opening poorly in seventh place with an estimated $5.6M. Wish Upon received a C CinemaScore.

Next weekend may well continue the streak of well-reviewed summer releases.

Next week will see Dunkirk likely claim the crown, as Christopher Nolan's World War II drama targets a $55 million-plus debut.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. But overseas audiences are still turning out in healthy numbers for Gru with the worldwide cume now up to $431.4M (led by China's $113.6M) and global at a solid $619.4M on its way to at least $850M.
