Presidential Poll 2017: Voting begins at Odisha Assembly

Officials of the Election Commission of India oversee preparations at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Saturday ahead of the Presidential election. DH

The Election Commission has permitted 14 Rajya Sabha and 41 Lok Sabha members to vote in the Assemblies for the presidential election, while five MLAs will vote in Parliament on Monday. Hence, the colour of ballot papers will help the returning officer count votes based on the value. The term of present incumbent Pranab Mukherjee comes to an end on the 24th of this month.

"Before entering (a) voting chamber, one polling staff will collect personal pens, if any one is possessing, and will give (the) special pen to MPs and MLAs for marking ballot", the statement said.

According to the analysis, there are 65 women MPs from the Lok Sabha making up for 12 percent of the total votes while the number is 23 in the Rajya Sabha.

The EC has also prepared posters on dos and don'ts at the polling centre.

Deka said two MLAs, Tarun Gogoi and Kamal Shing Narzary, will cast their votes in New Delhi. These have been procured from Mysore Paints and and Varnish Limited, which is a supplier of indelible ink - popularly known as voter's ink - to the Election Commission (EC).

Once the voting process is over, the ballot boxes will be taken to Delhi under tight security.

The President is elected through an electoral college that comprises MPs and State and Union Territory MLAs.

BJD in support of Kovind has total 117 MLAs with 2 independent law makers, while the regional party has 19 Lok Sabha and 8 Rajya Sabha MPs in hand with a total of 28 parliamentarians. There are two candidates in the fray for the coveted post- National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Meira Kumar. The counting of votes will take place on July 20. Both the candidates as well as leaders of ruling parties and oppositions are campaigning across the country seeking votes from the state legislatures and parliamentarians.
