Race Report > Sunday - British GP > F1 2017

Lewis Hamilton answered his critics with a dominant British Grand Prix victory, his fourth in a row at Silverstone and fifth there in total, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said on Sunday.

It was Hamilton's 67th career pole position - leaving him one behind Michael Schumacher on the all-time list - and his fifth pole at the British GP to equal the record held by Clark.

Hamilton's championship-leading Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel, who has a 20-point advantage after nine of 20 races, qualified third. Vettel (2009) and Kimi Raikkonen (2007) have also won here.

Bottas's second place means he closes to within 23 points of the summit with 10 races to go.

This is the second time in three races that Raikkonen has qualified ahead of series points leader and teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Raikkonen was third for Ferrari, after the Italian team had made a strategic gamble with their tyres, ahead of Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who had started 19th on the grid.

Talk during the build-up centred largely on Hamilton's decision not to attend an F1 event in London's Trafalgar Square, making him the only driver on the grid not to take part.

"They are very quick in the race".

His Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was poised to finish second but he also suffered a puncture in the closing moments to promote Valtteri Bottas one spot as Mercedes completed a remarkable one-two finish.

"Hindsight is great, it's easy, but at the time it felt OK", Vettel said of the problem. "I think we looked a bit better in the race than in qualifying and we just need to understand why, in qualifying, we were struggling that much".

"I'm really proud and I have to really take it back again to the incredible dedication from my family, my dad", he added. At the same time, Valtteri Bottas was in contention for the podium after being forced to start in ninth to serve an engine change penalty. Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez scored a double points finish for Force India at the outfit's home race in eighth and ninth, respectively. I think that made him more determined'.

The subsequent battle with the Red Bull Racing driver was one of the highlights of the race, but for Vettel, who found himself pushed off the track at Vale after he had put Verstappen off the track at Stowe, but Vettel was not judging who was to blame in either incident.
