S&P 500 closes at record high, Nasdaq outperforms Dow Jones

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.44 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,459.27, a record.

US stocks closed higher on Friday, with several indexes posting all-time records, led by large gains in the tech sector.

XAutoplay: On | OffThe Dow Jones industrial average slimmed to a 0.1% gain, after climbing nearly 0.2% in late trade. The Nasdaq 38.03 points, or 0.61%, to 6312.47-the largest one-week point and percentage again since early December. For the week, the Dow was up 1% while the S&P was up 1.4% and the Nasdaq was up 2.6%.

Twenty-five of 30 index members contributed to the gains, with Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) adding 1.7%.

In company news, shares of Nvidia Corp. fell 1.2% after surging to a record close on Wednesday on the back of an upgrade at SunTrust. This was despite a mixed batch of second-quarter earnings from three major banks weighing on equities. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended up 0.2% each.

Delta Air Lines Inc on Thursday reported a 21% drop in second-quarter profit because of sharply higher operating costs, despite higher passenger unit revenue, sending its shares down about 1.7%.

The Citigroup posted earnings per share of 1.28 dollars on revenue of 17.9 billion dollars, topping analyst expectations. The consensus in a Thomson Reuters poll expected an EPS of $1.58 on sales of $24.96 billion.
