Secret Service didn't vet Trump Jr meeting

Trump son-in-law under pressure over Russia scandal

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and current White House senior adviser, and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort also attended the meeting.

"It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information", Mr Trump Jr said, adding that the lawyer then began discussing the adoption of Russian children by American couples under a program Mr Putin had suspended.

Trump asked why his son is being scorned by the "Fake News Media" when Hillary Clinton "illegally [got] the questions to the Debate & [deleted] 33,000 emails".

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr has denied that his June 2016 meeting is evidence he colluded with the Kremlin.

Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's personal attorneys, appeared on multiple Sunday talk shows to say the meeting didn't violate the law and that the president wasn't aware of the meeting and didn't participate. Forty minutes later, he posted, "With all of its phony unnamed sources and highly slanted and even fraudulent reporting, #fake news is distorting democracy in our country".

Political veterans from Republican and Democratic campaigns have said it was unusual to take a meeting with a foreign operative offering information on a rival.

On an appearance Tuesday night on Fox News Channel, Trump Jr. downplayed the importance of the meeting, saying it produced nothing worth passing on to his father.

The meeting appears to be the most tangible evidence of a connection between Trump's election campaign and Russian Federation, a subject that has prompted investigations by congressional committees and a federal special counsel.

The number of people known to have been at the meeting also changed over time.

On Sunday, the top Democrats investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election said that e-mails that Trump Jr. sent about the meeting with the Russian lawyer appeared to confirm that members of the Trump campaign had meant to cooperate with Russian officials.

As a lobbyist bridging the worlds of the former Soviet Union and the United States, Rinat Akhmetshin has the reputation of a charming, skillful, behind-the-scenes operator, NBC News reported. Trump Jr. replied, "I love it". The views expressed in this article are those of just the author.
