Trump Admin Preparing Another Round of China Sanctions over North Korea Ties

Talks between North and South Korea are rare and usually take place at Panmunjom a truce village on the heavily fortified frontier that separates the two countries where solders from both sides face off

Since taking office in January, Trump has vowed to press Beijing, North Korea's only major ally and largest trade partner, to do more to curb the reclusive regime's weapons programs.

The increase in trade, analysts say, is the latest indication that USA efforts to rein in North Korea by encouraging economic pressure from China, which is overwhelmingly the Hermit Kingdom's most significant trading partner, will ultimately bear little fruit. On May 25, Putin offered to send an emissary to Pyongyang to ascertain North Korea's intentions, and relay North Korea's conditions for diplomacy back to Seoul.

"It's like asking the Catholics to stop believing in Jesus Christ."

Shortly after their meeting, Trump said he had told Xi that China would get a better trade deal if it reined in North Korea. South Korea usually refers to loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts by both sides, while North Korea wants a halt to routine joint U.S.

Kerry Brown, associate fellow at Chatham House's Asia program, agreed. "The will is so great that unless the regime goes away, this facet of their activity won't change".

North Korea on Friday threatened to take "corresponding measures" if the UN Security Council adopts another sanctions resolution in response to the country's test-launch of an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, ICBM, on July 4.

Despite Washington's calls for action, trade between China and its neighbour increased 10.5 per cent to $2.5 billion in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, including a 29.1 per cent jump in exports.

As the United States has searched for ways to punish North Korea for its repeated defiance of worldwide bans on its nuclear weapons testing and ballistic missile launches, it has repeatedly turned to China.

But customs administration spokesman Huang Songping said Beijing was upholding the United Nations sanctions against the regime of Kim Jong-Un.

Such trade hasn't sat well with Trump.

"There are some people who think we should engage early with Pyongyang".

The dictator has anxious observers following recent tests of Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM).

Trump angrily ended his tweet: "So much for China working with us - but we had to give it a try!"

The latest release from China presents a muddied picture. "North Korea is somehow able to finance buying all these Chinese products", he said.

"Trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40 per cent in the first quarter".

South Korea offered Monday to talk with North Korea to ease animosities along their tense border and resume reunions of families separated by their war in the 1950s.

Kellyanne Conway, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Sean Spicer, in their supporting roles, and Steven Mnuchin, speaking from his elevated position as USA secretary of the treasury, are tragicomedy personified as they bring us onstage to witness spinning dazzling enough to blind those who can be dazzled by words.

"The current situation is terrible - the only thing worse is all the other options". North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he would never negotiate his weapons programs unless the USA abandons its hostile policy toward his country.

In the proposal for talks, South Korea did not elaborate on the meaning of hostile military activities, which varies between the two Koreas.

Stability on the peninsula remains its primary interest.
