Two Israeli cops, three terrorists dead in shootout on Temple Mount

Three Palestinian terrorists opened fire on Israeli police officers Friday morning on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Another Jewish Home MK, Moti Yegev, said the holy site "should be closed to Muslim [worshippers] for a long time".

The gunmen walked toward a gate in Jerusalem's Old City, spotted the officers and began shooting at them, police spokeswoman Luba Simri said.

Police released images of what they said were the assailants' weapons, including a knife, a pistol and a homemade automatic firearm.

In addition, a Palestinian 18-year-old was killed on Friday by gunfire during clashes with israeli soldiers near Bethlehem in the occupied west bank, according to the palestinian ministry of Health.

A relative of the attackers described them as devout Muslims who lived in northern Israel but frequently traveled to the shrine to worship.

Israeli authorities shut the area, which is holy to both Muslims and Jews, after a shooting attack.

Other images from the Facebook page showed intense interest in the Temple Mount and its Muslim holy sites.

He made the statements in reaction to Israel's decision to close the al-Aqsa Mosque compound to the Palestinian worshipers on Friday.

"I didn't really understand what was going on for a second, and then I realized that the terrorist that was apparently dead wasn't and he got up and tried attacking the police officers and they shot and killed him on scene", said the man.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack in a telephone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but also said closing the area could have repercussions.

Hussein's son Jihad Hussein told AFP his father had been taken to a police station near the Old City.

The compound lies in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move that was never recognised by the global community.

Napier said Israeli forces and settlers have a long history of carrying out atrocious acts against Palestinians; so, the oppressed people have the right to use military acts to defend themselves.

Israel has claimed that violence is caused largely by Palestinian "incitement". Two German tourists were also stabbed to death in the Red Sea city of Hurghada. Two Israeli officers were killed in the attack, with a third injured. Waqf officials said Israeli police detained its guards there after the attack.
