United Nations urges McAuliffe to halt Morva's execution

Corrections Montgomery County Sheriff's Office

On Wednesday, McAuliffe said he personally does not support the death penalty, but he took the oath of office and must enforce the laws of the commonwealth.

William Morva is scheduled to be executed Thursday night, but his attorney is hopeful Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-Virginia) will step in.

That's what William Morva told his mother in a phone call from a Virginia jail where he was being held on attempted robbery charges more than a decade ago, NBC News reported. The other was sheriff's deputy Eric Sutphin. In an email Rachel Sutphin, daughter of Montgomery County Sheriff's corporal Eric Sutphin, says she's against the death penalty for religious and moral reasons.

The mother of one victim of a Virginia death row inmate says she hopes the man's execution proceeds as planned.

Morva was sentenced to death in 2008, even though two psychologists had diagnosed him with a severe mental disorder similar to schizophrenia.

Morva also killed a hospital security guard, Derrick McFarland.

Clouds of scandal gather over Vatican after police break up gay orgy
According to the Italian newspaper paper Il Fatto Quotidiano , that congregation is dedicated to tackling sex abuse in the church. Vatican police raided a cardinal's apartment last month where allegedly a drug-fuelled homosexual orgy was taking place.

Morva is set to die by injection in the death house at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. "The denial of reasonable accommodation in detention can be considered a form of discrimination against him because of his mental health condition", the United Nations experts added.

His supporters say that Morva had long suffered from psychological delusions which render him incapable of understanding the consequences of his own actions, and that jurors were not given an accurate picture of his mental state during his trial.

Davison said the push to save Morva's life is not out of disrespect to the lives lost. "There are others like me, and some day they're going to get together, and they're going to sweep over your civilization and wipe these smiles off your faces".

EU Ambassador David O'Sullivan called it "an exceptional step that we have chose to take to underline the importance we give to the case of Mr. Morva."While the EU is opposed to the death penalty in general, O'Sullivan said the mental-health issues in Morva's case gave it extra urgency. One person who wouldn't necessarily agree is Morva himself". More than 34,000 signatures have also been collected on petitions urging clemency, she said.

Among those urging McAuliffe to stop Morva's execution are UN Special Rapporteurs Agnes Callamard and Dainius Puras.
