The shape-shifting character has existed for over 50 years, but this is the first time the role will be played by a woman. But perhaps most importantly, it means that the answer to the pub quiz question "Who was the first female Doctor Who?" isn't Jodie Whittaker, but is actually Joanna Lumley.

Whittaker is the 13th official incarnation of the Doctor, a galaxy-hopping Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels in the Tardis, a time machine shaped like an old-fashioned British police telephone booth.

YES!

"Doctor Who" ran from 1963 to 1989, and was revived to acclaim in 2005.

The Internet is still buzzing from Sunday's news that Jodie Whittaker will take over the title role from Peter Capaldi in the upcoming eleventh season of Doctor Who.

But lest some fans worry that her interpretation of Dr Who could prove to be a bitter pill to swallow, she added: "I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender". Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change.

"I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our No. 1 choice", Chibnall said.

"The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one - not a fearful one".

That Chris refers to Chris Chibnall, who'll be stepping in as the series' new showrunner, following the departure of Stephen Moffat.

The Sun ran a clip of Whittaker serving as a nude model in the 2006 film "Venus", and tabloids like Daily Mail, The Daily Star, and Express published stills from her film and TV work.

"Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away".
