Alvaro Morata impact not enough as Burnley stun Chelsea

Chelsea endured a shocking start to the defence of their Premier League title on Saturday, losing 3-2 at home to Burnley, with their new captain Gary Cahill sent off after only 14 minutes and Cesc Fabregas following late on. Alvaro Morata, on as a second-half substitute, reduced the deficit in his first league start since a club-record move from Real Madrid for £58 million (NZ$103 million).

Stephen Ward scored the second goal for Burnley on 39th minute of the first half to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

Somehow the Blues pulled a second back through David Luiz in the 88th minute, but there was to be no dramatic comeback for Antonio Conte's team.

Morata scoring on his league debut.

"The rest of them were actually really good performances and we were unlucky not to get something from a couple of them, but it'll be a really good test for us early in the season".

Aaron Mooy, who Huddersfield tied down to a permanent transfer following his terrific loan spell with the Terriers, was involved in both of his side's first-half goals. That was until Luiz sprinted onto Morata's pass and volleyed in to bring the nine men to within a goal of Burnley.

The 31-year-old, who returned to Goodison Park earlier this summer after 13 years at Manchester United, headed home Dominic Calvert-Lewin's cross on the stroke of half-time.

West Bromwich Albion made another set piece pay as they opened the season with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at The Hawthorns.

Swansea failed to muster a single shot on target and will be relieved to have escaped with a point against a Southampton side which has now failed to score at St Mary's in 545 minutes.

The Blues didn't come pouring out of the gates, either, though the hour mark saw a decent chance and shouts for a penalty as Burnley got extra chippy.

However, there is a sense around Stamford Bridge heading into the new campaign that all is not quite right.
