Brexit transition would not be way to remain — Hammond and Fox

But Brussels has insisted that progress must be made on divorce arrangements first.

The two leading politicians said the government wanted to ensure "there will not be a cliff-edge when we leave the EU".

Philip Hammond, the chancellor, and global trade secretary, Liam Fox, have come together to declare that a post-Brexit transition would not be a "back door" to Britain remaining in the EU.

This week we're expecting to find out the UK Government's position on the border.

"We've been crystal clear that issues around our withdrawal and our future partnership are inextricably linked, and the negotiations so far have reinforced that view", a source in Britain's Brexit department said.

A source close to Mr Davis said the papers would highlight the British teams were "on the front foot" in the negotiations.

Among the details is one covering the hard issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland once Britain leaves the EU. The two sides will be looking for a solution to those issues at the next round of talks due at the end of this month.

Sources at Britain's department for exiting the European Union said the "future partnership" papers would show that the British government was ready to move on to the next stage of the negotiations.

Estimates of how much Britain will have to pay to fulfill its obligations from the period of its membership until March 2019 are in the tens of billions of euros range but estimates vary widely among European Union and United Kingdom politicians and economists.

Free movement for Irish citizens in and out of Britain is expected to continue after Brexit, with the establishment of a Schengen-style area between Ireland and Britain created to resolve the border problem. The Brexit department declined to comment on the story.

The British government has said it will give more details about its policies on Brexit next week.

Other papers will address the availability of goods for the European Union and Britain and access to official documents after London has exited the bloc.

A survey of over 20,000 ordinary voters has revealed an unbelievable support amongst both Leavers and Remainers for Theresa May's strategy of securing a clean Brexit with the EU.

The British ministers also promised a series of papers on their ideas for a "Future Partnership" with the EU to be presented in the run-up to October's European Council.

The first will be a proposal for new customs arrangements.

Some still dispute her approach, with former foreign minister for the now-opposition Labour party David Miliband and pro-EU Conservative MP Anna Soubry warning in Sunday newspapers of the economic "self-harm" of leaving the single market.
