Bryce Harper leaves game with apparent knee injury

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Chris Stratton delivers a pitch during the first inning of the first baseball game of a split doubleheader against the Washington Nationals Sunday Aug. 13 2017 in Washington

Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper slipped on the first base bag attempting to beat out a grounder, injuring his left knee in the bottom of the first inning of the game Saturday night against the Giants at Nationals Park.

While trying to beat out an infield single in the top of the first inning, Bryce Harper slid on first base and landed awkwardly on his left leg.

Harper remained on the ground for a few minutes as the ballpark went silent. Harper could put no weight on his left leg and needed assistance to leave the field.

The game began just after 10 p.m. following a 3-hour rain delay. This certainly seems like the type of injury that could mean the end of Harper's 2017 campaign.

The Rockies inked first baseman Ryan Howard to a minor league contract on Saturday, per a team announcement. His final season in the majors yielded uneven results, pairing an impressive 25 home runs with a less impressive.196/.257/.453 batting line in 362 PA. Ryan, 37, hasn't played in the majors this season but could be a September call-up if he shows some power at the plate. He was released by the Braves after he hit.184 in 11 games at Triple-A. And former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda fractured his right wrist in a fall.
