The Magpies were forced into early chances in a goalless first half with Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune coming off. The Dane's pass by met by an on rushing Alli who slotted past Rob Elliot.

But the game was to take a nasty twist for Newcastle within minutes of the restart when, after referee Andre Marriner had blown for a foul by Alli, Shelvey appeared to stand on the prone player's ankle as he walked by, prompting the official to show a straight red card.

Harry Kane struck the post in injury time as Newcastle fell apart late on.

Moussa Sissoko was booed as his return to St James' Park ended with Son Heung-min taking his place before the hour mark, and Tottenham soon made their extra man count.

Tottenham controlled possession but Gayle threatened in behind and went down in the box under contact from Kyle Walker-Peters, making his Spurs debut at right back with Kyle Walker sold to Manchester City and Kieran Trippier out with an ankle injury, only to see the flag raised for offside.

With 20 minutes left, Ben Davies was found by Eriksen with the Welshman scoring the second goal of the game. Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli support Harry Kane.

Much of the team that started on Sunday were stalwarts from Tottenham's most successful Premier League campaign ever last season.
