Derek Wolfe will not need surgery, shares pic of swollen ankle

Broncos' Derek Wolfe carted off practice field with injury

The Broncos defensive line was already thinning when second-string nose tackle Billy Winn went down with what turned out to be a season-ending ACL tear during Thursday's preseason opener against Chicago.

Wolfe was helped onto a cart, driven off the practice field, and helped into the trainer's room while putting no weight on his right leg.

Wolfe, 27, was injured when he became tangled up with offensive tackle Menelik Watson in a team drill.

Wolfe said that he "dodged a bullet", and then posted a photo of his swollen ankle to Twitter. The team could provide an update after practice depending on the result of any exams.

Wolfe recorded 51 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 games last season.

The team practicing in full pads just over 36 hours after their first pre-season game.

According to a report from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the organization doesn't believe Wolfe's injury to be serious pending further testing. He played in 2014 and 2015 with the Oakland Raiders.

Safety T.J. Ward has not been active due to a hamstring injury.

Rookie defensive end DeMarcus Walker shifted to outside linebacker earlier in camp following injuries to Shane Ray (wrist) and Shaquil Barrett (hip). Other rotational and depth players at defensive end include Zach Kerr, Adam Gostis, Harris and Shakir Soto. Kyle Peko broke his foot, and has not yet returned to practice.
