Detroit Red Wings condemn use of logo by white nationalists at rally

0:34 | NHL Nashville Predators Sign Ryan Johansen to 8-Year $64 Million Contract

Several of the right-wing sign holders have held up signs that feature the Detroit Red Wings' logo, which led to the team's statement.

That's because a white nationalist group called the Detroit Right Wings, members of which made the trip to Charlottesville, adopted the logo as their own.

The protests began Friday night when nationalists converged on the University of Virginia's campus and marched while carrying torches.

So why is the Detroit Red Wings' storied symbol being used by at least one white nationalist group?

In response, the NHL's Detroit Red Wings issued a statement Saturday condemning the bastardized use of their logo in such a hateful way and threatened legal action. In some instances, the spokes in the wheel were altered to represent the Nazi SS logo.

At least one group was seen carrying placards with the Red Wings logo, drawing the response from the National Hockey League team. "We will take immediate and all necessary steps to insure the use is discontinued as promptly as possible, and will vigorously pursue other remedies, as appropriate".

On Saturday, fights erupted and a few people were injured after a white supremacists group and counter protesters clashed in Charlottesville, Virginia, forcing local police and Gov. Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency.
