Federer stellar in victory over Bautista Agut in Montreal Masters quarterfinals

World No. 3 Roger Federer has reached the Rogers Cup semifinals following a straight sets victory over Roberto Bautista Agut in Montreal.

Other quarter-finals later Friday have Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., against Adrian Mannarino of France and fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany against South African Kevin Anderson. Shapovalov also upset former US Open victor Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round.

In Friday's quarterfinals, the second-seeded Federer will face 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, who outlasted Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) on center court at Uniprix Stadium. But while Ferrer managed to take the opening set - ending Federer's 32-set streak - the Swiss ace raised his game to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Shapovalov broke Mannarino to take a 5-4 lead in the deciding set and then served out the match.

Holding to love to clinch the opening set, after breaking in the ninth game, the 19-time grand slam victor did not look back, winning 81 per cent of total points on his first serve.

Federer's chances of winning another title this season were given a boost when top seed Rafael Nadal was upset by world No. 143 Denis Shapovalov of Canada on Thursday night. Shapovalov held his serve the rest of the way to knot the match at a set apiece. Haase said it was hard for both players after playing tough three-set matches against seeded players earlier in the week.

Hitting 19 unforced errors to 12 winners, the 18-year-old found momentum after a short rain delay, immediately securing a key break in the sixth game of the second set.

"So I don't quite know with Robin what I'm going to get". "I hope that this match gives me some better rhythm and confidence against Bautista Agut, who plays actually very similar to David", Federer said. I started to believe more and more again. Nowhere was Federer's wayward performance better illustrated than in the seventh game, when he squandered three break points at 0-40 to allow Ferrer to take a 5-2 lead.

The 30-year-old Haase said he always believed he could be competitive at this level, but he had to overcome a serious knee injury early in his career. Schwartzman's only ATP win was on clay in Istanbul previous year. I came back really fast, from zero to 60 in eight months. It drains you because you know you can do better. "After one-and-a-half years, I got back".
