Fired engineer James Damore: Google is 'almost like a cult' (GOOG)

Goolag Search

Employees across Silicon Valley are deeply divided about Google's move, according to a survey conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday by Blind, an anonymous corporate chat app. Google took this is as a direct insult and fired the author.

According to an op-ed titled "Why I was sacked by Google" in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, James Damore, who was sacked for writing a 10-page anti-diversity memo, said: "Google is a particularly intense echo chamber because it is in the middle of Silicon Valley and is so life-encompassing as a place to work".

Ads criticizing Google over firing James Damore have been plastered on benches and bus stops near the company's office in Venice. There may, indeed, be biological differences between the sexes that keep women from excelling in engineering and other sciences. Google said he had crossed the line "by advancing harmful gender stereotypes" and many employees were upset about the views outlined in the memo.

It was not immediately clear what legal authority Damore could try to invoke. I have been in a few product discussions today and felt energized by the important things we are working on.

Damore has already filed a formal complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming his rights were violated.

Debate over the treatment of women in the male-dominated tech industry has raged for months.

Google must now grapple with possible lawsuits; a fired employee who's fast becoming a public figure; an ongoing debate over the limits of free speech; a surge of employees leaking information; and a struggle to protect employees as it becomes the latest villain for the alt-right.

Can we talk about the story of whether Google, a company entrusted with everyone else's personal secrets, should let its own employees' confidential data be thrown open to the scrutiny of a vengeful world in the course of trying to show that its workplace is not rife with discrimination? Conservative commentators such as former Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos - several Google employees who are gay, lesbian or transgender. It went viral throughout Google and last week it leaked to the press. "We are unequivocal in our belief that diversity and inclusion are critical to our success as a company, and we'll continue to stand for that and be committed to it for the long haul", said Brown.

"He has created a workplace culture in which those with opinions like Damore's will be intimidated into remaining silent", Singer added.

In his memo, Damore slammed Google's "politically correct monoculture" and suggested women may lag behind men in top tech positions because women are less assertive and more neurotic.

Damore is now on tour of mostly conservative media outlets.

According to Google's 2017 diversity report, while the overall women to men ratio is 31:69, in the technology and leadership roles, the gap becomes even wider.
