Flood situation worsens in Assam, 5 dead

The third wave of flood had hit 15 districts in Assam on Friday

Floods and landslides triggered by rain has also thrown life out of gear in Arunachal Pradesh.

After a brief hiatus, floods have gripped Assam again affecting 11 lakh people in 19 of the state's 32 districts. The district administration has opened relief camps in many parts to provide shelter to thousands of people.

Guwahati: Nearly 3.55 lakh people in 15 districts have been affected badly by a fresh wave of floods in Assam. Around 1 lakh hectares of cropland has also been submerged. Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and others were engaged in rescue and relief operations.

A report of the State Emergency Response Centre of the Disaster Management wing said several major rivers, including Howrah River, which passes through the capital city, were flowing above the danger mark. Four people have died in floods in Assam in past 24 hours.

In Agartala, the capital of Tripura, almost 20,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps.

The worst affected district in upper Assam are Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dhemaji and in lower Assam, it is Chirang, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar. The worst-affected area being the South Garo Hills, particularly Baghmara town, where over 100 families have moved from their houses to safer grounds.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited two flood relief camps situated at Dhelakhat in Tinsukia district and Dinjoy Hazarimal Higher Secondary School in Dibrugarh district, and enquired about the arrangements made for inmates of the camps. Proper rehabilitation measures have been taken for affected people and no stone would be left unturned in helping the distraught people at this hour, he added. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat, Dibrugarh, Tezpur and Dhubri, the ASDMA stated in a bulletin on Saturday evening. Normal Monsoon conditions persisted over Gangetic West Bengal, remaining parts of northeastern states, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka.
