Google's Latest Doodle Is an Interactive Hip-Hop Celebration

The 18-year old's play with reggae didn't go down well with the crowd, which gave a sense that reggae, an offspring of beats music, was fading away.

THE DAWN of hip-hop can be traced to a fateful Bronx back-to-school party in August 1973, so to celebrate the 44th birthday today, Google has teamed with two superstars to provide an epic global interactive jam. DJ Kool Herc turning tables.

Hip hop music is a genre developed in America in the 1970s which consists of a stylised rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.

"Starting with folks like DJ Kool Herc, DJ Hollywood, and Grandmaster Flash, the grassroots movement created a new culture of music, art, and dance available to the 5 boroughs of the city and beyond". Plus, while the Google doodle does start by trying to educate you with facts about the early days of Hip Hop culture, it soons segues into a virtual pair of record decks upon which you can pretend to be Tony Touch, DJ Kool Herc, or the guy that Vanilla Ice must have paid to sample that Queen song that time. Meanwhile, the artistic work in today's Google Doodle is the work of a graffiti artist named Cey Adams.

"Hip-hop was accessible", said Cohen.

Once you click on the doodle, you'll be taken on a brilliant tutorial which ends with the ability to chose records, place them on turntables, and mix them.

As Google users open the Google homepage, the interactive Google Doodle informs you of this celebration.

This week a Google Doodle also celebrated the Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year and officially marks the start of summer.
