Hackers leak email indicating HBO has agreed to negotiate and pay $250000

Jon Snow Battle of the Bastards Game of Thrones

However, the email to THR is from the same account going by "Mr. Smith" that has sent previous messages and proof of stolen content. THR has confirmed that the executive works for HBO in a technology capacity.

A separate statement, obtained by ABC News in July, also revealed that the network immediately began "working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms" once they became aware of the hack.

The Guardian and other publications reported earlier this week that hackers had posted some stolen HBO files online, demanding a bitcoin ransom to prevent additional releases. But the HBO executive's missive to the hackers is carefully worded and avoids language that would be construed as paying off the hackers and instead is framed as an offer for a reward for discovering vulnerabilities in HBO's system. Several episodes of various HBO shows were leaked in the first data dump.

It's just about money.

They have released more unaired episodes, including several of the eagerly awaited return of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which makes its debut in October.

The company said it was not communicating with the hackers. "This incident has not deterred us from ensuring HBO continues to do what we do best".

About a fortnight back, hackers broke into HBO's servers and stole a staggering 1.5 terabytes of data including five draft scripts of the seventh season of Game of Thrones as well as the personal numbers and addresses, home and email both, of the cast members of season 7 including Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, and Kit Harington. If HBO sets a precedent of opening their treasure chests for securing their information, such cases of security breaches might augment encouraging other cyber criminals to attack wealthy entities to receive the ransom.

HBO's parent company, Time Warner Inc., is now seeking federal government approval for an $85.4 billion takeover of the company by AT&T.
