It's going to shower meteors August 12

Perseids

The Perseid meteor shower generally starts in mid-July and peaks around August 12, as a result of the Earth passing through a trail of debris associated with a comet known as Swift-Tuttle.

Earlier this week, retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield chatted with one of our sister stations, Jack FM and talked about how up in outer space, you can actually hear the meteorites ricocheting off the space station.

Astronomers are projecting 150 meteors per hour across North America.

The problem is, this year's peak night for the meteor shower will coincide with a almost full moon.

The annual Perseids is predicted to be one of the most spectacular shows in years - with up to 100 shooting stars every hour.

The comet orbits the sun every 135 years.

The comet last passed by Earth in 1992 and will swing by again in 2126. "You might be lucky or unlucky; that's the way with meteors".

The greatest numbers of meteors will be between midnight and just before dawn on the mornings of August 11-13.

He added: "We can look forward to a decent display, even though they aren't going to be raining down from the sky". However, the meteors will streak across the sky in all directions, so it doesn't really matter.

Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar are the best places to watch the shower because of the low rate of light pollution and clear sky-view without any urban light pollution. It's also helpful to let your eyes adjust for about 30 minutes in the darkness. "So be sure you can at least devote an hour or more to viewing to be able to get the best show".

Gallery visitors made their wish during the meteor show on a Time Capsule Wall.
