J&K: Gun battle underway between security forces, terrorists in Shopian

Indian Army will soon deploy robots to curb terror in Jammu and Kashmir

On Wednesday, three terrorists have been killed in an encounter at Tral in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

Two soldiers have been killed in Kashmir's Shopian district where security forces were locked in a gunfight with suspected militants since Saturday evening, army officials said on Sunday.

After receiving intelligence inputs that a group of two to three militants were hiding in the village, security forces including Rashtriya Rifles, state police and the CRPF surrounded the area on Saturday.

The injured were shifted to SDH hospital Yaripora and District Hospital Kulgam for treatment. The Army quickly launched a search operation in the area but no arrests were made, the police sources said.

"As the security forces tightened the cordon around in the village, the holed-up militants fired at the surrounding security forces triggering a gunfight that is now going on", said a police officer.

Meanwhile, different reports suggest presence of 10 to 13 militants even though the number could not be officially confirmed.

Reports said that many civilians were injured after forces resorted to pellet firing on protesters who were trying to disrupt the anti-militancy operation.
