Jason Day quadruple-bogeys his final hole to fall 7 back

PGA Championship Golf

Lahiri followed up his 72 with a 73 that gave him a total of three-over 145 and the tied-43rd place as Hideki Matsuyama and Kevin Kisner, share the lead at eighth-under 134.

Rickie Fowler is a three under alongside Justin Thomas and Paul Casey. Why not now? Especially considering of the top 15 players on the leader board, only one (Louis Oosthuizen) has done so before.

Patrick Reed (69), Gary Woodland (69), Scott Brown (70) and Francesco Molinari (74) are also at two under.

Hideki Matsuyama has broad shoulders but is not finding it easy to carry the weight of an entire nation as he seeks to become the first Japanese man to win a major.

He and Kisner, who earlier fired a near-flawless 67, are two strokes ahead of Australian Jason Day (66), back in form after a recent flat patch.

The 24-year-old Bowood ace eventually carded a 75 to finish three over par and just a shot behind McIlroy, with American Kevin Kisner setting the clubhouse target on eight under par. Instead, it's going to take a miracle for him to catch Kisner. Day is starting to look like the No. 1 player in the world he was for most of a year ago, playing a four-hole stretch around the turn in 5-under par, posting a 66 and finishing two shots out of the lead.

"I kind of accept the fact that I'm essentially out of this tournament pending some form of insane stuff the next couple of days", he said. He then hit another wedge shot just short of the green, used his putter to knock it to 7 feet and missed that putt.

"I played nine holes with Rory on a practice day and they saw me almost hole a shot going into one of the par fives and they were chatting about me". His shot from that thick grass stopped 65 feet shy of the stick, and he three-putted. 17 and 18 and is tied for second at 6 under. "It was the worst lie I had seen all week, a downhill lie". The best he could do was hack the ball onto the green 60 or so feet from the cup.

Kisner said he prefers to be aggressive, but Quail Hollow often demands a defensive approach. "If something like that happens, I think I can handle it a little better".

But just when he appeared to have let his chance slip, Day surged again, making three consecutive birdies from the 14th, where he had to shed his shoe and sock to play from the hazard, to the 16th, his two peerless shots to the par-five 15th being a good sign.

"I was disappointed in myself on 18". 'I've played fine this year.

Matsuyama made the big charge on Friday by shooting a 64.

"The ball is coming out of the gun right where I'm looking at it", Kisner said.

Like Matsuyama, Stroud is happy to be in the hunt. "The nice thing about it was it put me in a position where something really special [Sunday] can ... you never know".
