LA City Officials Hustle to Meet Olympics Budget Deadline

Los Angeles City Council have backed the signing of the Host City Contract

The Los Angeles city council rubber stamped the host city contract Friday, paving the way for bringing the 2028 Summer Olympics to southern California.

The committee is hearing a mix of criticism and praise Friday morning. The contract outlines financial responsibility, although a budget has not been completed.

More than 50 Olympic and Paralympic athletes and city leaders joined Los Angeles 2028 in Council Chambers to express their support for bringing the Games back to the city.

The 11-year wait comes with millions of dollars in financial sweeteners, but also uncertainty about future costs.

A 12-0 vote today sealed the LA City Council's support for the new deal with additional International Olympic Committee contribution and funding for youth sports.

It will also authorise Garcetti and Wesson to sign the Host City Contract and provide a written guarantee stating the city will cover any potential financial shortfall incurred by the Olympic organising committee while staging the 2028 Games.

On July 31, Mayor Eric Garcetti and other leaders announced a tentative agreement to host in 2028 as long as the Los Angeles City Council and U.S. Olympic Committee Board of Directors also approve the change.

"Although such uncertainty exists with the 2024 Olympic Games which will occur in seven years, the four-year extension increases those uncertainties".

"This new MOU ensures that our City priorities remain front-and-center in LA 2028's preparations for the Games". With the Legislature on recess, it is not guaranteed that the state will approve the same amount for 2028 by a deadline of August 18.

"This opportunity is too great, we can not pass it up", Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson said before the vote.

Los Angeles officials have said the city would not need to build any new permanent venues to host the Games since LA already has multiple stadiums, arenas and college campuses.

There are not expected to be any "major" changes to the initial bid plans for the earlier edition. But speakers at the news conference were periodically interrupted by a group of about a dozen protesters who gathered on the sidewalk outside the secured area.

The contract has been signed today in order to meet an International Olympic Committee deadline of August 18, despite no revised budget or independent analysis having yet been carried out.

A recent poll by Loyola Marymount University that found 83 percent of Los Angeles residents support the 2028 bid. "I remember getting a gold medal and running around the track".
