Malaysia apologises for Indonesia flag blunder

"The SEA Games 2017 opening ceremony has been tainted with great carelessness that hurts our feelings".

Malaysia apologised to Indonesia on Sunday for an "unintentional" mistake in printing the Indonesian flag upside down in a souvenir guidebook for the South-East Asian Games. "Our flag.the Red and White...Astaghfirullaaah...", wrote Imam in Indonesian.

Khairy said he has ordered for the souvenir booklets to be corrected and reprinted.

The mistake, spotted at the opening of the games in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday (August 19) was shared on social media website by Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, who posted pictures of the mistake on his Twitter account and called it a "fatal careless mistake".

Indonesia had been quick to point out the mistake, with their Olympic committee chief, Inter Milan president Erick Thohir, slamming Malaysia's "negligence".

A Malaysian daily newspaper also printed Indonesia's flag upside-down, while Games organisers were caught using the wrong flag for two Brunei athletes at the synchronised swimming.

"(Datuk Seri) Anifah told me that an official apology would be issued by the Malaysian government to the Indonesian government via their respective foreign ministries", he said.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (pix) offered assurances that measures had been taken to address the unfortunate situation.

Indonesia's President Joko Widodo said it was a matter of "national pride" for the country, which is the biggest in Southeast Asia with about 260 million people. I very much regret that this mistake happened.

Nahrawi, who earlier described the error as "very painful", said he accepted the apology.

At the 2012 Olympics, North Korea's women's footballers refused to play, delaying the start of their game with Colombia, when they were shown next to the South Korean flag on a stadium screen.
