McCown guides Jets past Titans in low-scoring affair

CB Logan Ryan has a debut to forget with Titans

Bob Glauber has been Newsday's national football columnist since 1992.

The Jets are supposed to be a bad football team this season.

McCown enters his first season with NY.

Quarterback Josh McCown marched the first team offense down the field for an opening drive touchdown.

The Jets' offense through 11 training camp was equal parts dink and dunk. The biggest play, of course, was a 53-yard pass from McCown on the Jets' opening drive, setting up Peake for a red zone touchdown.

The 38-year-old McCown, who is the favorite in the Jets' three-man quarterback competition, started Saturday and was 3-of-4 for 72 yards.

McCown, who got the start, also had a strong night.

But if Saturday night's performance was any indication, at least there was progress. This was just a tune-up for McCown; look for him to play more next week. He also almost had a pass intercepted in the first half after it was tipped at the line. There was only one more deep attempt, and that one fell incomplete, too. They resulted in six punts, one missed field goal, and one turnover. He wasn't erratic, he didn't throw an interception and on most plays, he made smart checkdowns rather than forcing a pass. Hackenberg finished 18-for-25 for 127 yards. But the Jets only crossed midfield once and never seriously threatened to score. Or at least until Hackenberg can be trusted to perform at an adequate level once the games count.

Hackenberg played eight drives. He's getting better. Baby steps, but steps nonetheless. Decker was released by the Jets in June after injuries limited him to only three games last season.

And then there was Hackenberg, who had a good night by any measure. Conversely, the Jets DST holds more value in daily fantasy, as the return on investment could be rewarding given their projected affordable cost.

At some point, the time will be right for Hackenberg to get his chance, but there is still plenty of time to let the situation sort itself out. It's all about seeing what backups and third-stringers can do in real game simulations and also testing out certain packages and plays in games that don't even matter.
