Merck CEO quits Trump council over Charlottesville

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank has announced that he's leaving President Trump's American Manufacturing Council following Trump's response to white nationalists' rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A gathering of hundreds of white nationalists in Virginia took a deadly turn on Saturday when a auto plowed into a group of counter-protesters and killed at least one person in a flare up of violence.

The resignations came as criticism mounted over Trump's slow response to the weekend demonstration which ended in bloodshed when a suspected Nazi sympathizer plowed his auto into a crowd of anti-racism protesters, killing one and wounding 19.

"America's leaders must honour our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal", the executive said in a statement.

But Intel CEO Brian Krzanich was more specific when he resigned a short time later, writing that while he had urged leaders to condemn "white supremacists and their ilk", many in Washington "seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them".

"The executive order is hurting many people in communities all across America", Kalanick said at the time.

"Following yesterday's remarks from the president, I can not remain on the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative", Morrison said in a statement.

Alliance president Scott Paul, in a tweet, said simply, "I'm resigning from the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative because it's the right thing for me to do".

After Trump announced in June that the USA would be leaving the Paris climate accord, both Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Disney CEO Bob Iger left his business advisory council. "I believe the President should have been -- and still needs to be -- unambiguous on that point".

Musk resigned from the President's Council in June because of disagreements with the Trump administration's policy on climate change. The CEOs who left the council quickly faced his wrath, while those who have stayed have said it's important to speak with the president on economic issues.

Early Monday morning, the head of the pharma giant Merck - and one of America's most prominent black CEOs - abruptly quit Trump's manufacturing council. Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger resigned for the same reason from the President's Strategic and Policy Forum.

Lawrence Summers, once the chief economist at the World Bank and senior Treasury official, wondered when more business leaders will distance themselves from Trump.

The manufacturing jobs council had 28 members initially, but it has shrunk since it was formed earlier this year as executives resign, retire, or are replaced.
