Mourinho confirms United in talks over Ibrahimovic return

Martin Keown

"He's a player who was 29-years-old last week with five years in the Premier League or so".

"It is not because I have always done it [won the league title in his second season] that I am going to do it again", Mourinho said.

Ibrahimovic's one-year deal at Old Trafford expired in June and was not extended following the injury.

Mourinho says the Serb's consistency is what makes him a victor, explaining: "He is one of those players where there are no question marks with him".

"I am really happy to start the Premier League this weekend because our pre-season was very complete in a way where we start playing against Major League Soccer teams and we end it playing against the best teams in Europe", he said.

"I don't say I know the league better because I have been in this league for a long time".

"It's not something urgent, that we are desperate to have it done or not done".

"He wants more football at the highest level so we are having conversations and discussing the possibility of him staying for the second part of the season".

United also have the best opening day record of any Premier League team while West Ham have the worst so this should only go one way.

Mourinho delivered his Matic verdict in his usual deadpan fashion in his pre-match press conference ahead of hosting West Ham this afternoon.

"There is no guarantee, but naturally a manager in his second season knows the club and the players better".

"But we have lost important players to injury too, such as Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic". He thinks he can do more. We are going to try to win the title.

"We have had a better pre-season than previous year and we have the confidence levels of a team that has won a European competition and returned to the Champions League".

"I think Tottenham, without any spending, are equipped to win because they have a fantastic team, fantastic manager, great stability".

Romelu Lukaku is this summer's star signing to help fire United to the top of the table but manager Mourinho reckons everything has changed in the past 12 months. "I'm not a hard person to work with, in spite of it looking different sometimes".

"I'm happy with the club's efforts".

"I don't think I'm in a position of crying, moaning, protesting".

United start their Premier League campaign at home on Sunday when the Hammers travel to Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

"We have a central midfielder and a striker, so obviously another player would be one coming from the sides, but we have players and if we can not strengthen then we have people we trust".

"We got a central midfielder, we got a striker".

"The other 25 percent (of the transfer targets) will be another player playing from the sides. But we have players and if we can not strengthen the team in these areas, we have players that we trust".
