Muslim woman paid 27million after police officer forcefully removed her hijab

Muslim woman awarded £65,000 after police pulled off her hijab

The original policy stated that police could ban inmates from wearing headscarves altogether.

Kirsty Powell was stopped by police officers with her husband in 2015 as he was driving a lowrider vehicle.

NAIJ.com gathered that Powell was arrested during a traffic stop on outstanding warrants.

Powell was the passenger, but was arrested after police found a warrant under her name for a shoplifting incident. It was returned when her husband posted her bond. The officers informed her that she was "not allowed to wear her hijab" and that they were "allowed to touch a woman", the lawsuit states.

"She was held in the jail overnight, forced to sit in a cell feeling distraught, vulnerable and naked without her headscarf to everyone that passed", according to the lawsuit.

LOS ANGELES | A muslim woman who had her veil forcibly removed by police officers during his time in custody, will receive $ 85,000 from the city of Long Beach, in the suburbs of Los Angeles, in the framework of an amicable agreement. Powell made several requests for a female officer to search her and was denied requests to continue wearing her hijab in custody. She then filed a lawsuit in 2016 alleging the police department had violated her First Amendment rights and the settlement was approved this week and is to be paid by the local municipal authority.

Under the act, "individuals, houses of worship, and other religious institutions" are protected "from discrimination in zoning and landmarking laws", according to the Department of Justice.

Long Beach voted Tuesday to approve the settlement agreement, which includes $ 85,000 in damages, says Cair, noting that the city and other localities of the counties of Orange and San Bernardino, in the outskirts of Los Angeles, have amended their regulations to protect the right of the islamic headscarf in custody.

The suit caused the Long Beach police to change its policies.
