Nepal: 33 people dead, 4 missing due to floods and landslide

Heavy rainfall has lashed Nepal for the past four days swelling several Himalayan rivers beyond the danger mark and causing flooding and landslides at many places in the country

Nepal Police said 32 persons have been killed in the past month due to flood and landslides.

Almost 8300 police and army personnel have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecast moderate to heavy rains to continue across the country for the next few days.

Thousands of residents had been forced out of their houses in the hardest-hit areas, officials said, warning that the death toll could rise as at least 17 people were still missing.

"Monsoon rains and floods in the past two weeks have affected more than 100,000 people".

Following the rescue operation, over 200 people from Narainapur, Holiya, Phattepur, Tikulipur, Bairiya Sikta among other places of Banke district were rescued to safer zones. Officials said they would be fixing the electricity lines soon.

Met department has predicted heavy rains in Terai and some other parts of Nepal.

According to data by the ministry, one person was killed in Panchthar, four in Sindhuli, Jhapa and Banke each, five in Morang, eight in Sunsari, three in Sarlahi and Surkhet each and two in Bara and Dang each.

Footage aired on Nepali TV showed villagers wading through waist-high water with their belongings and using boats to reach higher ground.

Several highway bridges have collapsed and roads were blocked by landslides and floods, leaving thousands of travellers stranded, local media reported on Sunday.

Biratnagar airport in the eastern district of Morang was closed after being submerged in a metre of water, authorities at the global terminal said.

Yesterday, Nepal Cabinet had held an emergency meeting during which Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had ordered the local district administrations to intensify the rescue and release activities.
