Nigeria forces raid UN Maiduguri base

Nigeria forces raid UN Maiduguri base

"A United Nations source told Agence France-Presse that the search of the camp in Maiduguri, known as the "Red Roof", was illegal under global law and may have been triggered by inaccurate information that a key leader of the Boko Haram jihadists was at the base".

It added that this resolution was as a result of series of meetings held with the military authorities and Borno state government after the unfortunate incident, saying that the military has shown regrets over the incident and promised never to allow a repeat of such.

The searched raised concerns amongst members of the worldwide community with the United Nations directing its humanitarian workers operating in Borno State to remain indoors.

The Nigerian Army acted on intelligence reports in combing some areas of Maiduguri Metropolis which included a house purported to accommodate some staff of an global humanitarian organisation.

The rumour was later dismissed as UN's Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon, called the raid unauthorized.

"We are focused on the work ahead to ensure that the millions of vulnerable people in the northeast are supported with life-saving humanitarian aid", Lundberg added.

The raid happened against a backdrop of strained relations between the Nigerian military and foreign organisations seeking to relieve the humanitarian disaster engulfing the country's northeast. The clearance operations effort has been yielding several successes.

General Ibrahim Attahiru, who commands operations in Borno state where Maiduguri is located, said on Saturday that the army "will continue to work toward providing and enabling a conductive environment to United Nations agencies to enhance their operations".

"One of such included a property which was said to be occupied by United Nations Staff, although the property did not carry a UN designation". Notwithstanding, the search operation was conducted peacefully at the premises, when the troops were allowed into it, just like other buildings.

"Information about Shekau's presence in the Red Roof was already being spread yesterday (Thursday) on the social media", said the document, apparently issued by the UN's Department of Safety.

A United Nations source told AFP such searches were illegal under global law and risk raising suspicions about the organisation's work.

Tsav said, "There is nothing wrong with the military searching the United Nations property".

When contacted about the development and government's position on it, the acting spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Jane Adam, said, "I will find out and get back to you".
