No War This Week... with North Korea

Pyongyang had threatened to fire four ballistic missiles near waters off the USA territory of Guam but backed off its threat last week while key us officials played down fears that war with the North was imminent.

As part of the exercises, imagery from military satellites orbiting above the Korean peninsula is at times used to peer deep into North Korea, said a former South Korean government official who declined to be identified.

North Korea warned Sunday that the United States will be "pouring gasoline on fire" by conducting an annual war game in the South next week amid heightened tensions between Pyongyang and Washington.

North Korea has in the past threatened to attack Japan, a staunch us ally and host to USA military bases.

The latest statement by Kim Jong-un signalling a pause in Pyongyang's war of words with Washington has given the U.S. a window of a few days to negotiate a way of defusing a risky standoff.

Residents of a town on the Japanese coast held evacuation drills Saturday to prepare for any launch of North Korean missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam that would fly over their homes.

The U.S. has rejected the "double freeze" plan proposed by China and backed by Russian Federation, which would require the U.S. and South Korea to end their military drills in exchange for the DPRK to suspend their missile tests.

Mattis also made clear the US' willingness to use force if North Korea steps out of line. "Whether or not he's thinking about other countries - Japan or Korea - well, that's a mystery".

This braggadocio has led to President Donald Trump to respond in kind, stating: "If the U.S., South Korea or Guam detects an imminent nuclear threat from North Korea, they will see fire and fury like never before".

President Kim Jong Un's regime made the blustery threat as the United States and South Korea prepared for a joint military exercise on Monday, CNN reported.

This was acknowledged by the U.S.'s top military officer Thursday when he said that any military action on the Korean Peninsula would be "horrific".

One of the posters shows a barrage of missiles fired from launchers toward a map of the United States in flames.

Onodera said North Korea has plans to launch ballistic missiles to the waters close to Guam, and it is also advancing on their efforts to launch ICBM-class ballistic missiles, miniaturising nuclear weapons to warheads. Though he did not elaborate on what the consequences would be if the North crosses the "red line" he repeatedly warned the country against the move. "I read those", Mr Tillerson said.

It has an estimated range in excess of 10,000 km, making it capable of reaching most of the continental United States.

The colorful posters and defiant slogans are the latest sign of the tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over the North's nuclear weapons program.

It declared North Korea's army could target the USA mainland, Hawaii or the Pacific territory of Guam at any time, claiming America would be unable to "dodge the merciless strike". Trump calling the bilateral FTA with South Korea "a frightful deal" has ordered his trade representative to renegotiate some of the terms in the trade pact.

This is the best chance that Trump will ever have to limit North Korea's missile programmes.
