Norovirus sickened hundreds, linked to Maumee donut shop

The number is climbing with 266 now sickened in a norovirus outbreak in the Toledo, Ohio area.

"I was a little surprised, and kind of scared because we had just gone to eat donuts there the day before the news came out that the virus had hit". The patients showed up at clinics from August 4 to August 7.

A sign posted on the restaurant on Wednesday stated that it was closed because they were out of doughnuts.

Owners of the restaurant, Dar and Yann Chao, said they are working with the health department to determine the cause of the outbreak.

Norovirus, which spreads easily through food and drink, inflames the stomach and intestines and often causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

A spokesperson from the health department says the restaurant has been very cooperative and voluntarily closed on Tuesday to deep clean the kitchen and sanitize the entire facility. The shop has been opened for 14 years and the couple who owns it declared that their customers are like family. People typically become ill 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus, and symptoms usually last one to two days - and it is important to note that people can spread the virus for up to two weeks after their symptoms go away.

The health department will reportedly inspect the joint once the cleaning is done and the joint can only resume operations if the officials give them a green signal to go ahead with it.

Walkup said she wouldn't hold it against Mama C's if she or her children get sick.

A norovirus outbreak tied to a local OH doughnut shop has sickened more than 200 people, including 15 young children at an eight-year-old's birthday party.

For those who are sick, Mr. Zgodzisnki offered several tips to try to avoid spreading it to others: Frequent hand washing, especially after using the bathroom, and preparing or eating food; using a separate bathroom from others in the residence; cleaning surfaces frequently with disinfectant wipes; laundering soiled linens in hot water; and staying home if sick.

The health department spokesperson tells 13abc she hopes to have more information in the coming days.
