EU extends pressure on North Korea

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will convene an extraordinary meeting of ambassadors next week to discuss the diplomatic crisis surrounding North Korea's nuclear arsenal, the bloc's external action service announced Friday evening.

The European Union expanded its sanctions on North Korea as the back and forth between the U.S. and Pyongyang escalated.

To remind, the U.N. Security Council on Saturday adopted Resolution 2371 to toughen sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development programs.

"The decision brings the total number of persons under restrictive measures (.) to 62 persons and 50 entities as listed by the UN".

The most recent escalation was prompted by sanctions against North Korea approved by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last week in response to July's launches of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang. The EU has a policy of critical engagement towards North Korea and its goals are to support a lasting diminution of tensions on the Korean peninsula and uphold the global non-proliferation regime.

In connection with the testing of Intercontinental ballistic missiles, the sanctions against the DPRK.

The EU's sanctions are seen as its efforts to intensify pressure against North Korea amid the escalating war of words between Pyongyang and Washington.
