Outrage mounts over dozens of infant deaths at India hospital

In 48 hours 30 children dead in gorakhpur

In the wake of the awful Gorakhpur hospital tragedy claiming 63 lives allegedly due to lack of oxygen supply, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Saturday said the guilty will not be spared. Parents claimed the oxygen supply to the children's ward ran out on Thursday night and that relatives were given self-inflating bags to help the children breathe. Raids have been conducted at the Lucknow-based firm which stopped supply of oxygen to the hospital. The issue of settlement of the pending money is what costed the lives of little ones.

He dubbed the suspension of the principal of the medical college as an "eyewash".

Following this, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress on Saturday asked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to step down from his post. The tragedy has been condemned as a "massacre" and the step from the government comes after the provincial administration got battered by allegations of criminal negligence by rights groups and opposition parties.

Authorities have launched an inquiry into the causes of the oxygen disruption but denied reports that it had caused the deaths at the Baba Raghav Das Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state. As the Opposition called for the resignation of the Health Minister of state and of UP CM Yogi Adityanath, the hospital chief Dr. Rajeev Misra has been suspended and CM Yogi has promised to "not spare anyone found guilty" in the probe. "So the report about death of children because of oxygen issue is false", Mr Trivedi said.

Two more deaths were recorded in the hospital on Saturday morning.

So far at least 71, including infants, have died from encephalitis at the BRD Medical College hospital. Reason behind the drastic incident alleged to be some infections and lack of oxygen supply in the paediatrics ward.

Speaking to ANI before leaving for Gorakhpur to look into the matter personally, Patel said, "The incident is very unfortunate and we are deeply saddened".

Azad further said that Congress party had spent crores rupees to provide medical facilities in the hospital during the time of its ruling.

"The delay (in payments) happened because the funds hadn't come in", Dr Misra said at a press conference after his suspension. "Yes, 60 patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don't think it's linked to reports of oxygen shortage".

The procurred data also shows the number of oxygen cylinders sent for refilling each day, showing a clear shortage of liquid oxygen in the hospital. It is the place where both births and deaths take place.
