Pearson into 100m hurdles final

Hurdlers in the opening round of the women's 100m hurdles at the IAAF World Championships London 2017

Athletics - World Athletics Championships - women's 100 metres hurdles final - London Stadium, London, Britain - August 12, 2017 - Sally Pearson of Australia celebrates after winning the gold medal.

Pearson was considered the main challenger to world record holder Kendra Harrison heading into the event, and with the American putting in a messy performance it was the Australian who took her second world title in a time of 12.59 seconds, adding to the one she won in Daegu back in 2011.

World-record holder Kendra Harrison finished fourth.

"Far out, that was bloody hard", gasped Pearson, who became only the fourth woman to win the world title a couple of times. Germany's Pamela Dutkiewicz finished third in 12.72 seconds. "I'm so exhausted but I'm sure it will sink in soon", Pearson said.

"It's been a long journey back from injury, but to get this moment and go and celebrate in front of my family is unreal".

Farah, who won the 10,000m once again last weekend, dug in to finish 0.43secs behind new world champion Edris, while Paul Chelimo of the United States claimed bronze.

Once Pearson arrived at the pre-championships training camp in Tonbridge she handed responsibility for the final stage of her buildup to Australian head coach Craig Hilliard and team coach Matt Beckenham.

After several seasons wracked by injury, the decision 12 months ago by the hurdler to coach herself won the blessing of those who mattered most, a band of supporters that includes husband Kieran Pearson.

It was the latest instalment of the great rivalry between Pearson and Harper-Nelson, with the American having relegated the Australian into second spot at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, only for Pearson to reverse that result four years later in London.

"Me and Sally have just battled it out for years and it's been so great to be here with her".

"I never doubted it, she knows her body".

She then underlined that by reaching the final as the fastest qualifier in 12.53 on Friday.

"I'm so excited right now", Nelson said.

"I love this stadium, I love the people and I'm so happy to have been back here doing the same thing again (winning gold)". "Am I going to be able to listen to my body and be smart about it and look after it?' I just said 'Well, you are going to have to try".

Meanwhile, local favourite Mo Farah had to settle for a silver medal as he was beaten to 5000 metres gold by Muktar Edris in his final major championship race.

"At the end, I could see Sally had won and I thought "it's me and Sally again".
