Premier League Rewind: When West Ham Scuppered Manchester United's Title Chances

United boss Jose Mourinho praises effective Romelu Lukaku after West Ham brace

Jose Mourinho thinks his Manchester United side showed their best when they relaxed in their 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United at Old Trafford.

As reported by the Guardian, on the prospect of re-signing Ibrahimovic once the 35-year-old striker has recovered, Mourinho said: "We are having conversations and discussing the possibility of him staying for the second part of the season".

"But then again, [we had] good stability, good confidence levels - desire to play until the end - it was good, really good".

Manchester United boss Mourinho told Sky Sports: "The game was hard, it was open at 2-0 and they had a chance to score. He was really good on the ball, better than I thought, composed". "It was a massive under-performance from those players, so they have to get back up there this year".

"I'm not going to say our performance was flawless - because it wasn't ideal - we made mistakes and there is room for improvement, it was a solid performance".

The north London side, who lifted the FA Cup last season, won the Community Shield last weekend after beating Chelsea in a penalty shootout.

The Red Devils dominated the game from start to finish and were fully deserving of their victory over the Hammers.

Meanwhile, the Hammers will arrive in Manchester with former United striker Javier Hernandez in the fold.

One player who will be excused for not scoring will be new signing Nemanja Matic, who has been at the club for less than two weeks but already looks like the stable defensive midfielder the team need to set Pogba free.

"Zlatan is injured and needs time to recover", Mourinho said.

"Last season, two of them were not in Europe", Mourinho said. So the fact we, won the match is the most important thing.

"What would it mean for me to be the Premier League champion? It was a very positive performance", Mourinho added.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: "I can not believe Chelsea have let him go, it doesn't make sense".

Three of the last five Premier League games between these two clubs have ended in a draw, with one win apiece in this run.

And while he acknowledges that it will be a challenge to continue that happy habit in the coming campaign, Mourinho insists that Manchester United are intending to "go for it".

Tottenham hasn't spent a penny in the transfer market this summer but still got off to a winning start Sunday.
