Peter Madsen, 36, initially claimed he had dropped Kim Wall, 30 off on an island in Copenhagen on August 10 after she finished interviewing him.

Divers are hunting for Wall's body around Køge Bay and Öresund, and sonar detection devices are being deployed in the search. When Wall did not come home, her boyfriend contacted the police and reported her missing.

Peter Madsen told the court Swedish journalist Kim Wall had died in an accident and he had buried her at sea, changing his earlier statement that he dropped her off alive in Copenhagen.

Madsen has denied any wrongdoing.

Peter Madsen, aged 46, had originally claimed 30-year-old Swedish writer Kim Wall disembarked safely on a Copenhagen island but has since admitted she was killed in an "on board mishap".

Madsen and Wall were sighted onboard the vessel by several people in waters off Copenhagen the evening of August 10. "No further information will be given with regard to the investigation of the case, since it is being conducted behind closed doors", the police statement read. She was last seen with Madsen aboard his submarine as it departed.

A Danish inventor has told police that a reporter declared missing after visiting his submarine died in an accident at sea. Madsen explained that he had problems with the tank and that due to this the sinking occurred, while police spokesman, Jens Møller, stated that it seems the submarine was sunk deliberately.

Mr Madsen, an entrepreneur, artist, submarine builder and aerospace engineer, went before a judge on Saturday for preliminary questioning.

Wall's body has not yet been found.

Madsen is a Danish inventor who crowdfunded the construction of the submarine, Nautilus, in 2008.
