Robin Haase reaches the semi-finals at the Rogers Cup

Denis Shapovalov tosses the ball to serve to Alexander Zverev of Germany during the semifinals at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament Saturday August 12

Here's what went on.

And the decider was one-way traffic for Federer, who saw out the win with a textbook serve and volley to set up a last-eight meeting with Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Federer had beaten another Spaniard, David Ferrer, 4-6 6-4 6-2 to book his place in the quarter-finals, while Bautista Agut had got past Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6 7-6 7-6.

Shapovalov double-faulted as he crumbled for the first time, handing Zverev a 5-4 lead, and the German served out the set.

The 36-year-old Swiss will next face unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victor over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

"I'm happy I'm playing as well as I am this year on the match courts".

Unlike the match against Ferrer, in which he made a lot of unforced errors before managing a 4-6,6-4, 6-2 win, Federer was in complete control while decimating Agut.

Federer served nine aces and hit 28 winners to improve to 35-2 on the season.

Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman posted a odd win over American Jared Donaldson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Robin Haase, the 52nd-ranked Dutchman who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1.

The 30-year-old Haase said he always believed he could be competitive at this level, but he had to overcome a serious knee injury early in his career. "I just told him that this is the beginning for him".

Federer served two double faults in his opening service game but still managed to save three break points to fend off his bullish opponent.

The first set was a disaster for Shapovalov.

At the Toronto WTA event, Caroline Wozniacki defeated World No.1 Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-7 (3) 6-4 in a marathon quarterfinals match marred by four rain delays.

In the second set, Schwartzman was the first to drop a game, and it was one he never should have.

Although the Dutchman surprisingly broke back, Federer immediately restored his two-game cushion before holding to love for the second time in three attempts.

Spain's David Ferrer, 35, was a perennial top-10 player until he began to drop in the rankings past year. Haase passed up five break points, while Schwartzman missed six points to win the game before finally clinching it. EPA/WARREN TODACaroline Wozniacki of Denmark celebrates her win over Sloane Stephens of the U.S. after their semi-final match in the Rogers Cup Women's Tennis tournament in Toronto, Canada, 12 August 2017. With Haase's weak second serve and dips in play, this is a match Federer should win in straight sets.
