Sea Princess has nightly curfew amid waters known for pirates

Passengers on a luxury cruise ship were told to turn their lights off and keep quiet after dark for 10 days to avoid the threat of pirates. The caption took measures to make sure that ship was "prepared for a pirate attack", she added.

All passengers were required to take part in a compulsory "pirate drill", where they were told to return to their rooms so they could be counted by crew when an alarm sounded.

Carolyne Jasinski, a media specialist from Australia, said the cruise liner was shrouded in darkness as it passed through the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal.

Curtains had to be drawn, and there were no late-night evening strolls on the deck or movies under the stars, according to one passenger's account.

Rumors swirled onboard the ship, according to Jasinski, who said the ship's captain tried to alleviate passenger's fears.

One of the most dramatic incidents happened in 2008 when the Nautica cruise ship was sacked upon by two pirate boats in the Gulf Of Aden, according to the IMO.

She wrote for News.com.au: "Captain Gennaro Arma addressed the ship". A few drills had them hanging onto handrails to brace themselves just in case the ship had to quickly maneuver away from approaching pirate ships. Armed with guns they can sneak up on larger ships and take over the crew, according to Jasinski's essay.

Travel at 60 contacted Princess Cruises for comment, but had not received a response at the time of publishing. "In the case of a real threat, those passengers in outside cabins were told to close and lock their balcony doors, then lock their entrance door to their cabin and take shelter in the corridors".

But when sirens alerted the 1,900 passengers of the drill - prompting them to head to the ship's 1,008 cabins for a headcount - it became more serious.

However, Fox News reports the ship was equipped with pirate-eluding tools, including fire hoses, officers on watch, and a even Sonic Boom weapon that could knock pirates off their ladders.

"In addition to our normal ongoing security training, additional piracy specific training is conducted prior to any of our vessels entering areas of concern", the company said. A Sea Princess spokesperson told The Telegraph that there was not a specific threat and all the measures were precautionary and, in fact, common to ships sailing through that region.
