Tesla Seeks to Test Electric Truck Prototypes for Platooning and Self-Driving

According to Reuters, based on a email obtained by them between Tesla and DMV, the automaker met with transportation department officials in Nevada to discuss about its plans to test a self-driving truck crossing between the states. "And unless that programmer is actually a truck driver and then you will have a lot of accidents".

On the other hand, if Tesla can persuade Nevada and California that its vehicles are safe, there's no federal law that would trump their ability to let Tesla run trials on highways.

Developing autonomous or self-driving vehicles have become a common aims of the Silicon Valley companies.

On the heels of releasing the first of its much-awaited Model 3s, Tesla motors is looking into a new arena: self-driving trucks. Previously, he'd said it would be "seriously next level" and was slated to debut in September.

The idea that Tesla is working on incorporating self-driving technology into its upcoming semi truck falls in line with how aggressive the company has been at building the same tech into its consumer cars.

Tesla has been a leader in developing self-driving technology for its luxury cars, and is about to start manufacturing the lower-priced Model 3 vehicle. However, the company has managed to keep the autonomous efforts under wraps. Tesla's Autopilot feature can act as a driver assist, but that's a long way from founder Elon Musk's dream of allowing a driver to sleep through their journey. But a report in Reuters adds a new, if somewhat unsurprising, wrinkle to the mix: the Tesla big rig is probably going to have self-driving capabilities. That company is still enmeshed in a complex lawsuit filed by Google's Waymo self-driving vehicle unit. Besides producing a video showing an Otto truck driving down a road without any safety personnel in the front seat, the company also executed the drive without the appropriate autonomous testing permit. Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and beleaguered Uber subsidiary Otto have been among the firms working on similar projects for some time.
