Three dead after supremacist march in Virginia

A group of alt-right activists marched through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville chanting

One woman was killed when a sports auto rammed into a crowd of protestors at the Charlottesville Downtown mall. Authorities have arrested James Alex Fields Jr. of OH on suspicion of ramming his auto into pedestrians, killing one, a 32-year-old woman, reportedly a paralegal named Heather Heyer, and injuring 19 more.

"This is a devastating loss for their families, the Virginia State Police, and the entire commonwealth", McAuliffe said.

Charlottesville Police identified the driver as 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio.

"The hate you hear around you, that is the anti-white hate", Jason Kessler, a spokesperson for Unite the Right, said among a chorus of boos.

'But my message is clear: we are stronger than you.You will not succeed. "There is no place for you here".

Right-wing blogger Jason Kessler had called for a "pro-white" rally, and white nationalists promoted the gathering widely. People fear for their lives, and we need to come together and stop this division. "And it's brought here by people who belong in the trash heap of history with these ideas".

Two Virginia State Police pilots were also killed when the helicopter they were in, which had been assisting law enforcement in the rally, crashed just before 5 p.m., state police said.

Hundreds of white marchers with blazing torches clashed briefly with counter protesters on the Charlottesville campus of the University of Virginia on Friday, the eve of a rally planned by thousands of white nationalists, media said.

McAuliffe said at a news conference earlier in the day that three people had died, apparently a reference to the woman who died in the vehicle crash and the two victims of the helicopter crash.

The city's Mayor Bill de Blasio called the violence by white supremacists "domestic terrorism".

The remark drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans for seeming to lump anti-racist protesters in with the far-right rally led by prominent leaders like David Duke and Richard Spencer.

For his part, US President Donald Trump tweeted: "We all must be united and condemn all that hate stands for".
