Two NASA official eclipse viewing locations in Hampton Roads

A student looks at the partially eclipsed sun in northern England

"When the eclipse happened and it went total, we were in about 30 seconds of eclipse that day".

Who else is excited about the August 21 solar eclipse? However, at totality, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun, make sure to remove the filter so you can see the Sun's outer atmosphere - the corona. Coverage will be featured during the live four-hour broadcast Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA.

At Lake Mead, 71 percent of the sun will be eclipsed. The eclipse will be visible here from about noon to 3 p.m.

"The best thing to do is to cover the camera lens with a solar filter during the moments before (and after) totality when the sunlight is still blinding".

If you're not going to see the big total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, it doesn't mean you can never see another one again. Homemade sun filters and regular sunglasses do not provide sufficient eye protection.

"Exercise good judgment on the roads, plan ahead, no stopping on the side of the road and, of course, no driving with those eclipse glasses because it's really tough to see".

Tickets, which include the cost of eclipse-viewing glass-es, are $12, $10 for children 12 and younger, and $7 for Planetarium members.

Hart said a total eclipse is "the rarest astronomical event, in any location, that you will ever experience in your life".

Some McDonald's locations outside of OR - including Missouri and Washington - are also selling eclipse glasses.

Check the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers link, https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters, for a list of manufacturers and authorized dealers of eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers that are verified to comply with ISO 12312-2, global safety standard for these products.

The legitimate glasses, which offer no views outside the eclipse, carry their own hazards, however.

Get help from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, telescope or other optical device.
